The Underdevelopment Trap

Recently I went to a bank in Jamaica to add my daughter’s name to my accounts that I’ve held there for several years. We were told that the bank required two references from a select group of persons for my daughter plus proof of address. Those had to be submitted before the bank will even start processing our request. In addition they wanted our TRN numbers (without asking they assumed that we are both Jamaicans and have TRN cards). After explaining the process to us we were given some forms and we left the bank to have them completed determined that we should be able to submit the required documents before the close of business.

After leaving the bank I confidently told my daughter that one day Jamaica will reach the stage where we can apply for a bank account online and get it approved within minutes.
